LED lighting by Metaphase

For more than two decades, Metaphase has specialized in the development and manufacture of lighting for image processing and industry. The delivery program now includes over 1,000 different lights and power supplies, the inclusion of which in our portfolio will be expanded in the near future.

LED Line Lights

Illumination for today's image processing requires an ultra-high intensity with simultaneous highest uniformity of the illumination. The LED line lights from Metaphase can easily be integrated into existing applications and have an adjustable lens with which a narrow strip of light can be generated over a distance of 10  mm up to several meters. Either built-in fans or a new, computer-controlled cooling system using compressed air are available as cooling options.

The possible applications include front or rear lighting when using line scan cameras in the quality control of continuous materials or other applications with high-speed scanners. Microlenses for which a patent is pending produce uniform illumination of a narrow line. The use of modern semiconductor components guarantees a long service life of 75,000 hours. Metaphase offers the largest selection of lighting in standard lengths. The lengths available range from 2" to 120" in increments of 5", making it possible to purchase just the right amount of light you need for your application.

The LED line lights are available as a high-performance version of the MetaBright series or as a standard version of the MetaLight series.

Areas of application are, among other things, the control of fabrics and fabrics, measurement of long objects, absolute position detection, control of circuit boards or hose and bottle control.

Backlights

Backlights are used in applications where a large field of view is required and the entire object is illuminated from the rear. Used alone or together with front lighting, this creates a dark shadow image of the object against a constantly bright background, in which the edges and structures at the edges are easily recognizable. The backlights from Metaphase are available as high-performance MetaBright, standard MetaLight and as waterproof MetaTight types.

Areas of application include the measurement of critical dimensions such as the thread on glass bottles, servo positioning, general position measurement, localization of defects on flat objects, packaging control, component position detection or background lighting in scanning applications.

Diffuse Dome / Tube Lights

Do you need uniform lighting in your application, for example to avoid shadows or to reduce reflections on smooth and polished surfaces?

Metaphase's diffuse illuminations generate light with a uniform distribution of intensity for the control of objects with a highly reflective, curved, round or uneven surface. These lights are manufactured from a type of aluminum that is also used in aircraft construction in accordance with the optical requirements. Both the inner and outer paintwork is done to the highest standards in order to guarantee a long durability.

The diffuse dome lighting enables shadow-free lighting with a compact size and high light output. According to optical engineers, dome light is undeniably one of the best types of lighting as it equates to daylight on a cloudy day. The diffuse tube lights were specially developed to illuminate objects whose surface has a high length-to-width ratio (such as long, narrow profiles). All diffuse lighting from Metaphase is available as high-performance MetaBright and standard MetaLight versions.

The areas of application include:

  • Metallized and chrome-plated surface control, especially when high surface finishes are expected
  • Control of CDs and DVDs
  • Packaging inspection of smooth plastics
  • Control of metal pins and parts with electrical contacts
  • Packaging machines and assembly machines

Ring Lights

  • Detection of labels and stickers
  • Reading marking labels on parts
  • Surface control
  • Illumination on microscopes
  • Control of solder joints
  • Identification of components
  • Control of structures on injection molded parts
  • All applications that require almost shadow-free lighting from a single light source from a short distance

With their typical ring-shaped shape, ring lights are probably one of the most popular types of near-field lighting for cameras today. This is no wonder as it is also one of the oldest types of LED lighting. These have arisen from the well-known ring-shaped, illuminated magnifiers that have already been used by millions of workers at assembly stations and which were usually operated with ring-shaped fluorescent tubes. The LED ring lights from Metaphase have been around for almost as long as cameras have been used for quality control in industry. They are known for their almost shadow-free lighting, high luminosity and five times longer service life compared to fluorescent tubes.

The ring lights from Metaphase were specially developed to create continuous 360-degree lighting around a camera or its lens. In many camera applications, this type of lighting offers the most cost-effective solution. Since LED ring lights are now so common, one could assume that there are no major differences between individual models. However, this is definitely the case, because every ring light from the Metaphase range has been specially optimized for a specific customer application.

Today Metaphase supplies ring lights in five different diameters from 3" up to 5.75", consisting of one row of LEDs up to five rows. Made from a block of 6061-T6 aluminum, all Metaphase ring lights are very robust. A highly developed internal temperature management dissipates the heat of the LEDs to the outside, which means that they hardly age and provide constant lighting for years. Three 1/4-20 mounting holes allow the ring light to be attached directly to a camera. In addition, the lights are suitable for direct mounting by most camera holders.

The ring lights are set to working distances of 1.5" to 4" in the factory. However, it is also possible to supply other working distances. The ring lights are available as high-performance MetaBright, standard MetaLight and watertight MetaTight versions.

For details on the products available, please refer directly to the manufacturer's pages on LED ring lights.

Off-Axis Ring Lights

  • Illumination of scratches on reflective surfaces
  • Control of BGA components
  • Water pollution control
  • Control of bottle heads
  • Illumination in microscopy
  • Inspection of molded epoxy parts to reveal imperfections such as cracks, air bubbles and other damage

Off-axis ring lights create dark field lighting that is suitable for highlighting surface defects, illuminating reflective surfaces or protruding structures.

Dark field lighting also creates a high contrast, with which, among other things, deformations, damage, fingerprints, edges as well as dust or bubbles in transparent materials can be made visible. If a dark field light is positioned behind a transparent object, edges and inclusions with high contrast can be easily recognized.

The lights can be operated in continuous mode with the SSI-40DC power supply from Metaphase. Alternatively, the SSI-103 LED power supply also provides a power supply for pulsed operation, which can generate up to 3,600 pulses per minute.

The off-axis ring lights from Metaphase are available as standard MetaLight and as watertight MetaTight versions.

For details on the products available, please refer directly to the manufacturer's pages on off-axis ring lights.

Fluorescent Replacements (Exolight)

Replace your failure-prone fluorescent lamps with LEDs! ExoLight is a cost-effective LED replacement solution for fluorescent lamps. Metaphase developed and patented special anisotropic diffusers based on microlenses to enable LED lighting for isotropic light.

What is isotropic lighting? In short, these lights are tube-like in form factor, but mimic the homogeneous emission of fluorescent lamps in a way that no other LED lighting can do. In addition, these types offer more power and a more stable output power in connection with the long service life of LEDs and very low system costs.

The ExoLight lights from Metaphase offer a decisive advantage for all applications in which the light output must be distributed homogeneously. Isotropic light creates diffuse shadows and extremely even illumination. In addition, Exolight lighting does not show the otherwise typical bright LED light spots of conventional LED lighting from other manufacturers. They also prevent the creation of numerous shadows that are known from other bright LED light sources.
