Removal of the Standard Glass Cover from CCD/CMOS Image Sensors
We remove glass covers many CCD sensors available on the market. This is necessary, e.g. for the following applications:
The cover glass is replaced directly by one or a combination of several filters. This usually improves the signal quality substantially, since unwanted spectral regions can be faded out directly. By putting the filter directly onto the chip a compact and above all durable unit without additional mounting plates for external filters in the path of rays is obtained.
- For the improvement of the optical signal, a fiber optic can be put onto the CCD sensor. Apart from optics, which illustrate true to scale, also reductions can be implemented. Compared to conventional lenses, the light losses are substantially smaller with fiber optics.
- Sensitivity to spectral regions outside the usual area can be expanded by laying special materials onto the chip. For this e.g. fluorescent materials for the detection of UV or X-ray are used.

Within the last years EURECA has developed several procedures for removing glass covers from CCD/CMOS image sensors. So we can provide a suitable procedure for nearly every sensor type.
The different procedures have different failure rates of damaged sensors, which are however only in the region of some percent in the best cases.
After the removal of the glass cover the sensors are inspected optical for possible damages and cleaned, if necessary. An additional electrooptical test with recording test images is possible, as long as we have a suitable camera board available. With sensors, which we process in higher volumes, this test is made always. As protection in shipment to the customer a special adhesive foil is used, which has to be removed before use of the sensor.
Experience out of many years and high sold volumes have shown that sensors without glass cover provide the same life time than the original types. Without glass cover the sensors are however mechanically very sensitive and have to be protected against humidity and dust.
Some of the line sensors which are used on our line scan cameras we already offer without glass cover from stock. At present this applies to the following types:

The risk of a defect normally is about 10%. In case of doubt, we must see the sensor, in order to judge if and how the cover can be removed.
